John North focuses his practice on intellectual property and other technology litigation with an emphasis on patents, trademarks and trade secrets.  A significant number of John’s cases have involved unfair competition claims, including false advertising and antitrust.  John also has experience in patent licensing, patent portfolio strategy, pre-litigation counseling and post-grant proceedings including inter partes reviews.  John has handled matters in courts across the country, including service as lead counsel in over 100 intellectual property disputes.

John’s clients encompass international, national, regional and local companies.  These clients run the gamut from billion dollar revenue corporations to organizations with modest revenues.  The representations include defense side and plaintiff side cases.  These representations are based on traditional hourly billing as well as alternative fee approaches including flat-fee, contingency and blended arrangements.   Examples of these representations include representations of billion dollar communications companies, representation of one of the world’s premier BIOS companies in one of the largest patent cases filed in 2014, working with a team of attorneys to recover settlements of over $200 Million for an international media company, and trying pharmaceutical cases where the market values ranged from the 100s of millions to over $1 Billion.

John has handled a broad range of technologies including computer software and hardware, the Internet, telecommunications, chemicals, minerals, pharmaceuticals, paint, medical devices, healthcare information systems, electronic coupons, program guides, and various consumer and construction products.

John has served as a Special Master to the District Court in two patent cases. He also has served as an expert on patent misuse and attorney fees.

Prior to joining HKW, John was a partner at national firm and chaired the Intellectual Property Group at another national firm.
